Generative Artist to Watch
Harvey Rayner - Collection: Fontana
This week: Fontana, a stunning Curated Collection dropped by Harvey Rayner @patterndotco on @artblocks_io.
Fountain in Latin, Fontana is a whimsical project aiming to capture the dynamic flow of water.
Curated by @crysalis_art @lindaphaze in partnership with @elcollectooorr
Merging @patterndotco's passion for technical drawing and generative approaches, this collection is truly a marvellous oxymoron from scratch to end. Let’s see why!
Oxymoron comes from the Greek oksýs & mōrós, sharp & dull. It refers to a pair of terms that contradict each other and yet are put together to generate a particular effect.
Poets have been using oxymoron for hundreds of years to trigger humor, emotions & philosophical stances.
Fontana attempts to encapsulate the flowing, ever-changing motion of water with geometric, fixed patterns. Its color scheme evokes early 20th century art. The palette is faded, bringing us back in time. And yet it's gen art, the most avant-garde art form of our contemporary era.
Fontana's aesthetics brings to mind muted tones used by G.Braque but also the desire for dynamism evoked by Futurists.
Fontana could have achieved this through vibrant and moving options. And yet chose being static, still, quiet.
Fontana is the embodiment of oxymoron. Like Catullus in his Carme 85 said Odi et Amo (I love and I hate), Fontana, through the choice of its subject and methods used, opens up room for contradictions, spurring thought and emphasizing complexity. Perhaps also evoking humor?
